The January Blues are a real issue many people face. It refers to the feelings of sadness, low energy and anxiety often triggered by post-holiday let downs. At Hartwig Care, supporting our care staff is at the forefront of our mission. Here are some of the factors that contribute to these feelings:
Post-Christmas Blues
After the excitement of the festivities has worn off and people have to return to their normal routines, it can often create feelings of disappointment and being overwhelmed with work. These feelings often have a negative effect on performance when returning to normal life. At Universal Care Services, we want to ensure that these feelings are combated, and our care workers feel supported both in and outside of work.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
The lack of sunlight during winter months can alter our internal body clock and reduce serotonin levels (the happy hormone). Because of this, it can often lead to symptoms of depression. The mental health charity MIND, has top tips if you or someone you know suffers with SAD, click here to find out more.
Financial Stress
The financial aftermath of Christmas can be difficult for everyone. With presents getting more expensive and the cost of living only increasing, holiday spending can create feelings of anxiety. Hartwig Care understands that this can be an issue for any of our care workers. This Is why we have partnered with The Care Workers Charity, who provide mental health support and financial grants to care workers in need.

Pressure of New Years Resolutions
The cultural emphasis of setting yourself ambitious goals during this time of year can often lead to feelings of guilt, and inadequacy. This is only heightened with the influence of social media and comparing your achievements to others. Here are three top tips, if you want to set yourself goals for the New Year without added pressure.
- Make them realistic – It is so easy to strive for more, especially when you compare yourself to others around you. By setting realistic goals you are more likely to stick to them.
- Know your “Why?” – Having goals for the New Year is always positive, but to make them valuable, ask yourself why they are important. Why does achieving this goal matter to you? You could write them down and track each month the ways you have worked towards achieving this goal.
- Only choose a few – Having a whole list of goals is going to add pressure. By only selecting a few important resolutions, you can make small changes to your lifestyle. (Without having to make new routines and burning yourself out!) Pick two or three that matter to you. This will be more valuable in the long run!
How are Hartwig Care supporting our care staff during the January Blues?
Monday the 19th of January (the third Monday in Jan) is Brew Monday. Launched by the Samaritans charity, it allows people to reach out, have a chat and a cuppa. Whether you prefer coffee or tea, or maybe even a hot chocolate, Hartwig Care wants to create a space where we can show our appreciation by supporting our care staff.
